The Association for French Cultural Studies

The Association for French Cultural Studies was launched in 1980 by a group of university professors affiliated with 14 different institutions from all over the country. Its aim is to provide a forum for college and university professors who teach French civilization and related courses.

Its broad goal is to consolidate the position of French Cultural Studies in college and university French programs and to promote discussion of theories and practices. Its specific goals include:

  • To encourage research and publication in this emerging field
  • To promote greater representation of French Cultural Studies in the meetings and journals of professional associations
  • To facilitate the circulation of information, bibliographic material, video documentation and film, both for teaching and research
  • To hold a regular colloquium that explores areas of importance to our conceptions and practice of French
  • To lobby for fellowships and other support from governmental, private and non-profit institutions

In order to ensure the future of French cultural studies, the AFCS invites all college and university teachers to join in this collective effort by becoming a member of the association.
