Cardinal Cooke and Joseph Brosnan

Cardinal Cooke presents the Cardinal Spellman Award to Joseph Brosnan, Student Government President in Spring 1968.  Brother John O'Shea, Dean of Students in background.  This period was tumultuous.  President Foy was approached about the advisability of someone in authority being welcome to campus.  He replied that the Marist students would do nothing rash.  His Eminence attended a Board of Trustees meeting for St. Francis Hospital, then came to campus to a reception attended by townspeople and students.   All went well.

Joseph Brosnan graduated in 1968, and went on for masters and doctor's degrees at SUNY Albany.  He became Director of Development at Saint Bonaventure University until 1990, then President of Belmont Abbey NC (1990-1995), and is now Vice President for Development and External Affairs at Teachers' College, Columbia University, where in 2004 he completed a $155 million fund drive.
