Heritage Professors

| The growth years from 1958 to 1970 had difficult demands on faculty. Besides their teaching assignments heavy by today's standards, they were often used in administrative posts, as athletic coaches, as dormitory resident advisers or running programs such as Upward Bound and programs for prisoners and prison guards.. While published research was urged, their heavy teaching loads and other activities made research difficult, and the results were not what would be demanded in today's academic world. As the college instituted higher demands for faculty research, this group found itself bypassed by the younger hires who did not have the exterior requirements as part of their expectations. To recognize the valuable service these men and women gave to Marist, the Trustees created a rank of Heritage Professor. To qualify, the person had to be hired at Marist College before 1970 and taught for 25 years at Marist. A special luncheon was organized for these men and women on 10 October 2003 at the beginning of Alumni Weekend. Shown above are the heritage professors, together with President Emeritus Richard Foy and Vice President for Finance Anthony Campilii, who joined the staff in 1962 upon graduation from Marist College. The lady seated at left is Eleanor Schroeder, widow of Doctor John Schroeder, a Quaker gentlemen who became the first full time lay teacher at the college and then Dean of the Evening Division. The lady at right is Mrs. Rimai, sister in law of Evelyn Rimai Fisher, who assisted Brother Nilus Donnelly in furnishing all buildings and taught art.
