The Pepin Reliquary at Conques

pictured:  Pepins reliquary, so called for reasons now forgotten, is adorned with precious stones and filigree work surrounding a figure of the crucified Christ between John and the Virgin Mary.  The chest was made circa 1000, presumably to contain the foreskin of Christ.  The items stored in a specially constructed wing of the abbey cloister constitute the finest collection of Carolingian art in France.

In 1812, it contained according to authentic manuscripts in chronological order with the following writings:   Merovingian writing: s. Marie, s. Pierre, s. Paul, s. André, s. Georges, s. Jean l'évangéliste, s. Épolite, two other saints (illegible);  Carolingian writing of the ninth and tenth centuries: rélique de la circoncision et de l'ombilic de Jésus-Christ; de s. Marie, s. Martin, s. Sost, s. Uplit, s. Pierre, s. Martin, s. Jean-Baptiste, s. Quirice et s. Julithe sa Mère, s. Martin, s. Just.
