Father Butler, a priest from Dublin Ireland, moved to Kansas in the late 1860s. He wrote an essay aimed at prospective Irish emigrants in Ireland which was published in 1871. The essay gives an interesting portrait of Kansas at that time, as well as the Irish in Kansas and the influence of the Jesuits in establishing missions to the Indian tribes. The essay was placed on the Internet in 2000 by Father David Smith, S. J. of Creighton University https://people.creighton.edu/~dsm09594/Butler1.html |

William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas was first published in 1883 by A. T. Andreas, Chicago, IL. It is available on the Internet. ( http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/ ) Organized by topics, such as railroads, as well as by county, the history gives an interesting perspective of Kansas just prior to the influx of most of our clan to Kansas. I found references to the Berry brothers in the article on Abilene, and a biography of John Henry Costello in the section on Marion County. |
