Delia Foy (1883 -1965) was the third child of Patrick Foy (1848 - 1904 ) and Bridget Morley (1858 -1903). Her baptismal or birth record is marked Bridget; Delia was a common nickname for Bridget. Since Delia used the name Delia on her immigration papers, she used the name Delia for the rest of her life. Delia emigrated to the USA 15 Sep 1905, arriving in New York City on the Campania from Queenstown. The ship manifest indicates that she was 19, came from Claremorris, and was headed to her friend Miss Morris, 593 Grand Street, Jersey City NJ. This leads us to believe that she was the first of her siblings to emigrate to America. Jane Foy, Delia's younger sister, cited Delia Foye at 242 West Jersey Street, Jersey City NJ, when Jane arrived in the US on 21 Sep 1906. We have no record of Jane's living there, as she located to Mount Kisco soon after arrival. Delia later went back to Ireland but returned on 21 Oct 1911, accompanied by Josephine Mullin, age 8, who had remained behind in Ireland when her parents, Michael and Mary Foy Mullin had emigrated to the United States. Coincidentally Delia took the same ship Campania on her second trip to New York. She is noted on the ship manifest as a domestic servant resident alien returning to her place at 353 North Avenue, Elizabeth NJ. Josephine, age 8, is denoted a scholar, and she is headed to her father, Michael Mullins(sic) 412 East 80 Street, New York City. Michael T Martin (1885 - 1965) was born in Dunmore, County Galway, the son of George Martin and Kali Donelan. He also entered the United States 15 Sep1905 arriving in NYC on the Baltic from Queenstown (Cobh). His ship manifest sets his age as 19, classified him as a labourer from Cappatugul, and headed for his sister, Mrs. Conway, 7(or 1)40 East 28 St, NYC. Listed directly below Michael is Patrick Martin, age 14, and Mary Martin, age 13, both classified as servants and both headed to Mrs. Conway. The Martin/Foy couple were married 29 June 1914 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elizabeth NJ. Witnesses were Patrick and Bridget Morley. Michael and Delia had three daughters. Beatrice (1915 - 1977) married Charles Cletus Hartman (1913-1999); Katherine (1917 - 1985) married George Penn (1914 - 1995) and Mary (1919 - 1994) married Joseph Kelly ( ? - 1975).

By the time of the 1920 census, Martin and Delia are married and living in Elizabeth City, Ward 8, with address 1039 Emma Street. (This is the address Michael Martin used when he registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918. Michael gave his age as 32, birth date as 7 Dec 1885, and occupation as Fireman, Standard Oil Co, Bayway, Union NJ).
At present, it is unknown whether the two Martin families are related. They are separated by the time of the 1930 census records. Catherine Mulkerin Martin came to the US with her mother and younger brother Patrick. Although listed as from Scotland, it must be remembered that many Irish went to Glasgow first and then to America. Catherine's mother was listed in the 8 August 1901 manifest as a storekeeper from Claddaghduff (on the west coast of Ireland in the Connemarra mountains in Galway) bring her two children, Catherine and Patrick to her husband at 74 1/2 Livingston Street, NYC. On line 13, just above Mary Mulkerin,is a Thomas Burke, age 25, labourer, headed to his brother-in-law M. Mulkerin 142 Livingston St, Elizabeth NJ. By 1930 Martin owns his own home in Elizabeth. The couple indicate they were married in 1914.
Alexander Martin also owns his own house in a different Elizabeth ward:
Since all these records are based on oral statements, there are discrepancies. However, the general picture remains clear. |
