The Murrays of Lissaniska
by Michael Kelly

The Murray and Foy families are linked through the Morleys.    The Murrays and Morleys lived in Bekan, near Knock.  Cecelia Morley married Daniel Murray while her sister Bridget Morley married Patrick Foy of lower Garryedmond.  The Murray lands were in Lissaniska, about midway along the road between Ballyhaunis and Knock.

Most of the Murray children emigrated to the United States, settling in and around New York City shortly after the turn of the 19th century.  Patrick Murray and his younger brother Daniel settled their families in the Bronx NY.  His sister Delia  married Dominic Sharkey; his sister Annie married James Quinn; and Cecelia Murray married Martin Durkin.  All three of the sisters and their families settled in New Jersey, initially in Hoboken and Weehawken

Patrick Murray  came to New York around 1906 and helped many of the Foy immigrants to get acclimated to the city.  This included Michael and Mary Mullin, and especially Patrick Foy, whom Murray introduced to work on the elevated railway and later on the police force.  The Foys and Murrays remained good friends, and their immediate families kept in touch for many years.

Bronx musings from Peter Foy, son of Peter and Virginia Foy 25 Feb 2006

The Bronx is one of 5 boroughs or counties that comprise New York City.  It is the only one on the mainland.   Basically it is a bedroom community of more than 2 million people.  A large  % of them commute to Manhattan  five days a week using public transportation.  The fare now is 2 bucks each way on the trains.  It was 5  cents when we were kids.

Today I took a puzzle to my neighbor and we went over the Italian pastas in it.  About 10 or so.  While there  I recalled that Gus (the neighbor) was from the Bronx.  We spoke of it a bit.  I mentioned that we had a cousin in his neighborhood who directed traffic on Fordham Road.  He says he knew him!!!  Paddy Murray was his name.  I believe he was a cousin of dad.  Had a very deep voice.  Was fairly tall.

Gus recalled hitching free rides on the back of the buses to Orchard Beach and how Officer Murray knew they were doing it but he let them.

He was a medic with the 47th Infantry and went through a great deal and survived.  He never talked about it as we learned that most of the men that got through WW I & II never would reveal their experiences.  "
