Overview

This is a revision of the original MaristsAll web pages designed by Richard Foy in 2001 and greatly enhanced by Jack Noone in 2001 through 2002. The major impetus towards revision was the dropping of FrontPage support by Microsoft and enhancements to Dreamweaver after it was purchased from Micromedia by Adobe. Original FrontPage coding made little use of Cascading Style Sheets which is now the methodology of choice. The current revision removes much obsolete code and makes loading and unloading sectional files faster.

A second major change is in the opening page. After securing permission from the British designers, Jack Noone incorporated a sophisticated menu system . A very similar menu design is now is now available from Dreamweaver; this lessens the need to contact multiple sources for update information. But the compact menu system cloaks all the choices available to an occasional user. We switched to a sidebar system that shows all the basic choices and reminds the user of what's available on the site.

A third criticism of the original site was its haphazard presentation. Care has been taken to give the site a uniform look and feel, at least for the opening page and its immediate links to subject pages. Eventually we hope to arrange for a common look and feel for the images and some other subsidiary pages of the website.

The basic data available to the Marists All editors is contained in a Microsoft Access database that (as of 2 July 200) tracks information on 743 participants. This data needs constant updating. But the work is spread among several editors, and the work of maintaing the common database as well as the subsidiary bases tends to lead to anachdifferences among postal addresses, email addresses and general contact information. We are working to simplify and codify the relationships among the editorial workers to prevent duplication and keep the data current.

Lastly we are looking forward to another person taking charge of the database and website. To ask such a person to tackle the old system as well as continue the new system would be daunting. So we are moving to a system current by today's standards and easily taken over by someone conversant with Dreamweaver Web design.
